Optical disc drive supplies to remain tight in 3Q09 Print E-mail
Friday, 03 July 2009

Sample ImageDigitimes reported that the supply of optical disc drives used in notebook and desktops will remain tight in the third quarter of 2009 due to a shortage of pick-up heads (PUHs). Global suppliers of pick-up heads, including Sanyo Electric and Hitachi, have focused capacity expansion on Blu-ray Disc pick-up heads rather than DVD and CD because the former is more profitable. Second-tier notebook and desktop vendors have suffered most from the supply shortage, since suppliers have given priority to first-tier vendors such as Dell, Hewlett-Packard and Acer.
